Data Description

The Geophysical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (GC RAS) maintains a unique geospatial data repository, encompassing over 200 GIS-layers, which are organized into 18 thematic categories.

The geospatial database is compiled from two primary sources: the results of scientific research conducted in GC RAS, and spatial data obtained from scientific and academic institutions in Russia and abroad.

A comprehensive approach to data collection and systematization has enabled the creation and effective maintenance of a multidisciplinary geospatial database in the Earth sciences.

The diversity of spatial data provides a robust foundation for conducting both fundamental and applied research in Earth sciences, environmental monitoring, sustainable natural resource management, spatial analysis, and other related fields.

The geospatial database comprises the following thematic categories:

  1. Agriculture
  2. Biogeography
  3. Ecology
  4. Geodesy and Cartography
  5. Geography
  6. Geology
  7. Geophysical Networks
  8. Geophysics
  9. Glaciology
  10. Hydrology
  11. Industry
  12. Meteorology and Climatology
  13. Mineral Resources
  14. Pedology
  15. Political Geography
  16. Population
  17. Remote Sensing
  18. Transportation

The “Earth Sciences” GIS geospatial database is formed through the integration of information from a wide variety of heterogeneous sources. Data were provided by leading scientific institutions in Russia and worldwide. Notable contributors include:
